Established since 1956
The department is functioning as a Regional STD Teaching, Training & Research Centre, Govt. of India and consists of four wings, Clinical, Laboratory, ART Clinic and Epidemiological. The Centre gives direct support to the public health programme of immense importance ie. National AIDS Control Programme
The Centre consists of four wings:-
1. STD Clinic.
2. Survey cum Epidemiological unit.
3. ART Clinic -NACO has recently established this clinic for providing anti-retroviral treatment to patients with HIV/AIDS.
4. Regional STD Reference Laboratory giving laboratory support to all the above.
The functions of the Centre are as under:-
1. Clinical and laboratory diagnosis of STD & HIV cases.
2. Treatment of HIV/AIDS and management of opportunistic infections.
3. Epidemiological studies in the field in collaboration with Dept. of Community Medicine, VMMC.
5. Teaching & Training.
STD Specialists, Microbiologists and Epidemiologists are jointly carrying out all the above functions.
1. STD Screening.
The STD patients and other clinic attendees get the facilities of routine STD clinical checkup, laboratory diagnostic tests for all STDs and HIV. Management of the patients is aetiological based.
2. Integrated Counseling cum Testing Centre(ICTC) of NACO
The centre of NACO, has been established under the STD Centre for pre- and post- test counseling of patients for HIV testing, mainly with the active support of the STD laboratory in HIV testing, both screening and confirmatory. CD4 & CD8 count in HIV patients are also being performed.
· HIV Counseling:-
The Counseling Centre with two (Male and Female) Counselors is providing pre and post test counselling to patients undergoing HIV test after informed consent
· HIV testing:-
HIV testing is carried out regularly. Besides, voluntary patients are provided on the spot rapid HIV testing. The laboratory is also functioning as the HIV testing laboratory for PPTCT project of NACO and for Annual Sentinel Surveillance of NACO.
3. Diagnostic work.
The Centre has laboratory diagnostic facilities for diagnosis of all STD’s like Syphilis (screening and confirmation), Chancroid (smear and culture), Herpes (smear and ELISA), Donovanosis (smear), Gonorrhoea (smear, culture and antibiotic sensitivity), Chlamydia infections ( Ag. and Ab. Detection ELISA), Trichomoniasis (smear and culture), Candidiasis (smear, culture and antifungal susceptibility), Bacterial Vaginosis (smear), HIV, HBsAg, HCV, HCMV -all by ELISA. The patients are offered treatment based on aetiological diagnosis. Rest of the infections are treated clinically.
4. Anti Retroviral Treatment (ART) - Under Dept. of Medicine
The ART Clinic was started on 1st December 2006 at this centre under the aegis of NACO. It has a dedicated team of a trained Medical Officer, staff nurse, technician, counsellor and data entry operator to cater to the treatment aspects of
5. Follow up of STD and HIV patients
i) STD patients are provided test of cure by culture and serology
ii) HIV seropositive and AIDS cases are monitored by CD4/CD8 count by Flow cytometry “FACS count system”. Diagnosis of the opportunistic infections are also provided.
6. Epidemiological Work
i) Partner notification for clinic patients :- at present done by the counselors.
ii) The STD Mobile Team ( including a medical officer, staff nurse, technician, nursing orderly and a driver) visits peripheral dispensaries for surveillance of STD/HIV/AIDS for management and control of STDs.
iii) The department has been playing an active role in the nationwide Annual Sentinel Surveillance of NACO (STD & ANC) every year.
The department has carried out several research projects sponsored by ICMR, NACO, DBT and WHO in the clinic, laboratory and the community on STD / HIV / AIDS for detecting prevalence, monitoring antibiotic resistant strains and for evaluating and developing STD diagnostics. Most of the research work of the Centre has been published in National and International journals of repute.
8. Training :
This Centre is a recognised centre for WHO fellowship training programmes. It offers training of Medical Officers in "Laboratory Techniques for Diagnosis of STDs & HIV / AIDS" - 2 weeks duration & training of "Laboratory Technicians in Laboratory Techniques for Diagnosis of STDs & HIV / AIDS" - 2 weeks duration
Round the year, the department provides training on clinical and laboratory aspects of STDs to the in-service medical and paramedical staff from all the States of Northern Region.
Besides this several workshops including hands on workshops are regularly conducted by the department at local, national and international levels.
9. External Quality Assurance both for VDRL, HIV, CD4/CD8 testing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of N. gonorrhoeae are regularly carried out and being participated in.
10. Teaching and Academics- The faculty of this Centre are actively involved in the teaching and training of MBBS students of VMMC and also students of nursing, rehabilitation courses.
