Introduction: The department was established in 1969 for specialized care of pediatric and newborn surgical patients.

Inpatient services: The dept. has sanctioned bed strength of 31 patients. Apart from this there are 8 beds for neonatal patients in the nursery and additional 15 beds. The ward has been divided into nursery (neonatal patients), emergency/critical care, post operative and general ward. All the rooms are equipped with bedside oxygen & suction facilities. Critical care room and nursery are equipped with 4 advanced pediatric ventilators.  For the care of these patients, apart the nursing staff, the faculty is ably assisted by senior residents (8), junior residents (8), who are posted in shifts. The department routinely performs minor surgical procedures like intercostal drainage, suturing of cut wounds and dressings in the dressing room attached to the ward.

OPD services: Patients have to make an OPD slip at the registration counter open from 9 am to 11.30 am (Saturday till 11 am) in OPD block. The OPD runs on all working days from 9 am till 12 noon. Senior faculty members however are available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Dates for elective (non emergency) cases are given on these days only.

Operation facilities: Operative facilities form the backbone of the department. Elective operations (non emergency) are performed in routine operation theatre on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. There are two specialized operation theatres on 3rd floor of operation theatre complex for pediatric surgery. Emergency surgery facility is available 24 hrs (depending on theatre availability) and is performed in emergency operation theatre located in the first floor OT block.

Neonatal and Pediatric Cystoscopy facility is available.

Operations performed: Entire spectrum of pediatric surgical operations is offered, including pediatric urological, gastrointestinal, neonatal emergencies and chest cases.   They include surgery for hernias, undescended testis, hypospadias, all operations on kidneys, ureters and bladder including tumors, reconstructive urology and endoscopies, Ano-rectal malformations, Hirschsprung’s disease and tracheo-esophageal fistulas to name a few.

Laparoscopic surgery: It was introduced in the department in mid 2006. The operations being performed are Herniotomy, cholecystectomy, orchidopexy (for bilateral impalpable testis), diagnostic laparoscopy, LAP assisted ARM and Hirschsprung disease operation.
