Safdarjang Hospital started the Department of C.T.V.S in 1960 and Open Heart Surgery & Coronary Surgery began from 1985.  There are two fully equipped & centrally Air Conditioned Operation Theatres.  Both OTs have full UPS back-up with central O2 supply and centralized suction.  Another two more OTs are in pipe line for upgradation with 14 beded Post-up ICU.  There two seats for DNB filled with two doctors every year and planning to start M.Ch-C.T.V.S in the present Academic year.

     The Department of Cardiac Surgery provides free treatment to Valvular Heart disease, Coronary Artery Disease and Congenital Heart Disease patients who are below poverty line under the dynamic leadership and guidance of Chief Cardiac Surgeon  Dr. Jagdish Prasad.

     The Department has four OPD days on Monday, Tuesday Wednesday and Friday from 2.00 pm onwards.

     The department is performing the following surgery from Monday to Friday Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR), Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR), Double Valve Replacement (DVR), closure of atrial septal defect, closure of ventricular septal defect, total correction of tetralogy of fallot PDA ligation, etc..  Closed Mitral Commissurotomy (CMC), Open Mitral valvotomy (OMV), Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) {Off-pump CABG and on pump CABG, most of the CABG are done on off pump. In suitable patients CABG is also done through left thoracotomy} Aneurysmal repair.  On Thursday department is doing lung surgery (lobectomy, pnemmupnaetom, decortication]. The department has the following facility for investigation like ECG, Echo, TMT, Holter, Cardiac Cath, 34 slice CT Scan which will be upgraded to 64 slice very soon.
