INTRODUCTION : - The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology was established in the year 1987, to cater to the medico-legal work of South-West district of Delhi. In those days about 900 post-mortem examinations were conducted annually. Now the number of post-mortem examination conducted annually is approximately 2450.
In the year 2001, the department established its teaching wing in Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and now regularly run an undergraduate teaching programme for about 150 medical students.
In the year 2002-2003, the autopsy centre was modernized and facilities like ventilated down draft autopsy tables, cantilevered body storage system with extra capacity, electric oscillating saw with vacuum dust extractor and autopsy light system were added.
The department of Forensic Medicine is engaged in teaching, research, training, medico-legal post-mortems, Clinical Forensic Medicine Services & court related work. Department is getting referred cases from court.
The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital is having mortuary facilities with cold storage to preserve 50 dead bodies.
The department is responsible for conducting postmortem examination of all medico-legal cases who expire within the prescribe jurisdiction.
Clinical Forensic Medicine:
The department provides expert advice in examination of cases for age estimation, in cases of sexual offences and other cases referred by the courts.
The department provides expert opinion in medico legal cases referred by the hon’ble Courts.
Appearance in the court of law as an expert witness in cases of medicolegal nature for the summons received from the courts in Delhi and other states.
The department provides guest faculty for various training programs organized by CBI Academy, Ghaziabad, LNJN National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Sciences, NIPCCD, Delhi, Delhi Judicial Academy,BSF camp Chavala.
